From smoking area to interactive sporting area/meet-up spot.
The Edison College in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands chose the Yalp Toro, as a replacement of the smoking area on the schoolyard. Excercising is not only good for your bodym but also stimulates your creativity, improves your ability to concentrate and also your fine motorskills. And thus studying is worthwhile as your information retention is higher.
Mariska Arendsen (psychologist at the Edison College): “Moving is healthy for the body and the children feel better mentally as well. unfortunately people are moving less and less. Children are using digital devices too often for example a tablet, telephone or TV. To stay healthy children have to move moderately intensively for at least 1 hour a day. Research at Edison College shows that just 17% of children there get that single hour of movement. In comparison to other schools we score about average. That why we decided to make exercise more accessable to give students incentive to be a good and healthy example to others
Mariska continues by saying: “The game-element really speaks to our middle school students. Sporting results in exertion during the breaks, so that the kids can concentrate on their schoolwork after. And, with the Toro the children play together which means they are developping their social skills. I think that will result in contact with children outside of their class. The playingarena means that students will be exercising more during the breaks and it becomes more attractive to stay around the school instead of going out into the neighbourhood to “hang around”. The Yalp Toro will also be implemented into the PE lessons at school.
