“Work hard, play hard. We all know that phrase, but in my case it truly reflects my job.”
Our new Sales Rep Delaney Haar tells you all about his first experiences with Yalp, interactive play and his plans for America!
A month ago I started my role as US Sales Representative based out of Chicago and flew back home (I’m Dutch native) to the Netherlands for a busy training schedule at Yalp headquarters. I received a nice warm welcome from everybody and it felt like I’d known them for quite a while. They were all very supportive and helpful filling me in on the world of play and everything related to it, since I’m completely new to this industry.
After all the introductions and basics we dove right in and I was able to experience and play on our interactive products. It was intensive and a lot of fun! The products are so easy to understand, versatile and very addictive. Did I mention fun already? Because that’s what play is all about… having fun! I felt like that little boy that was always playing outside from dusk till dawn only to, stubbornly, go home because my mom was screaming my name loudly through the neighborhood.
It amazed me how the interactive products could capture and spark joy in me as an adult. I mean… I’m not that old but that feeling just brought a smile to my face and reminded me of my childhood, born in a generation that always played outside, a time where the internet was only used for school purposes (if you were finally able to dial in that is), a time where cellphones had the size and weight of a brick, a time of 20 tv channels. A time where kids were having fun, being active and inventing new games amongst each other out in the fresh air, playgrounds that were always used and busy.
Looking back at that time and comparing it to now I see huge differences obviously technology evolving and thus having a big influence on all of that. As a father of two very active boys I find it very important to be outside a lot, be active and play, and yes… even during those cold Chicago winters.

After playing with the interactives at headquarters and feeling that spark I mentioned earlier, I’ve noticed that I play differently with my own boys. Not as involved as I would or should be. It’s sometimes challenging to me, because some playgrounds and their equipment are just not accessible for parents, all you can do is just basically stand there. The interaction that kids and parents have is just different.
I also believe that a lot of playgrounds are not as enticing and fun enough any more. I’ve heard the word boring many times at playgrounds. I even caught my own son saying it a few times and it makes me sad that he doesn’t get that spark I had when I was younger.
The same goes for parents, lot of times I witness that they are not engaging with their children. I see them so focused on their tablet or cellphone with no sense of the world around them. I talked to a dad last week and he mentioned that he is over 6ft so he can’t fit the equipment to participate with his son so he eventually gets bored and ends up doing work or playing games on his cell phone. In this case the sad thing is that the boy is more introvert than others and rather plays with his dad or by himself. The father noticed that the equipment was not stimulating enough to play by himself though and without the interaction of the dad or wanting to play with other kids, this often affects the boys motivation to play and most of the times the boy ends up wanting to go home to play on his tablet or watch tv.
So what can we do about it?
Let’s use technology and make outside play fun and enticing again, accessible to everyone!
That’s the beauty of our interactives. Each Yalp product has so many games to choose from, it never gets boring! I’m looking forward to get as much interactives here in the United States and to bring joy to everyone, from all ages and abilities. Hopefully you can join me on this fun ride and create smiles all over the country!
